 cheap charlies
All you rich western guys should be ashamed. I always give a boy 10,000 Baht for having a drink or short time, and 20,000 Baht for having an overnighter.
I think its the least I can do to support the poor, under privileged boys as I know at least 3/4 of my money will go back to the poor farming family that these boys have come from.
Its just my way to give a little back. I am able to afford to due to my hugely successful business.

I thank Perry40 for his comments. He understands the point I was making.

 Jan, cher,
I think tipping is a very private matter which, on balance, has got to be left to the donor without much fanfare or bravado. When I was young, I gave it away for nothing or for love, which soon proved to be nothing too. I never expected a tip. But I also think that the elephant man was probably a great tipper too.

You claim to be a businessman. Therefore, you are earning income from goods and/or services you are either procuring from or selling to the people of Thailand, where the average monthly income is 6,000 - 8,000 Bt.
While you are paying so well for someone to satisfy your libido, I wonder if you give the same consideration to those Thais who are helping you expand your businesses. Are you insisting to your Thai business connections that they pay their employees 140,000 Bt monthly income?

 Re: Jan, cher,
Excellent post tperhs.
If you want to pay Thai people Western salaries don't restrict it to bar boys.

Why the constant bitching over how much?
Shouldn't the amount we tip the boiz depend upon how happy they make us? I do find this constant bitching about some mythical average tip a tad boring since it's the most constant subject of discussion ad nauseam on almost every forum or board on Thailand.

Yes but without good reason!

The prices jan8888 has in mind are still vastly cheaper then the ones in New York, London or the other European capitals. So jan8888 proposals do have my sympathy. People that can afford to live in the Western capitals, and are hopefully for them even there in a position that they could afford a boy at the local rate, should not be so mean an give $ 22,00 for a short time off.
Since I am in a LTR, I have not offed a boy for a long time. But, I can not agree with Perry40 that because one pays substantially more in western capitals, they are mean spirited because they do not pay similar prices here in the LOS. Using this analogy, we will also be mean spirited if we do not pay substantially more than the requested amounts for food and lodging. I am certain the businesses would appreciate such generosity, especially since their costs for providing such items are based on the Thai economy, not that of western countries.
As previously mentioned, the average wage earner here gets 5,000 - 6,000 per month. The regular (apparently expected) tip of around 1,000-1,500 baht is a significant amount here - probably the main reason so many Thai boys are in the business (as noted in other threads, many of these boys are straight and often have a wife and kiddies - so why be in the business of gay for pay unless the income is much better than doing other types of work). If the boys are not satisfied with the "going rate," then I think they would look elsewhere for their source of income.
Of course, the amount you tip is "Up to you." So, if it makes you feel better to give substantially more - for whatever reason - then do so. But I would suggest that you not advocate that others should do the same.

Its always nice to know the market price of goods before you get to the checkout, why do you think supermarkets are so busy?
Wouldn't it be nice if you could walk into Telephone Bar and see all the prices on the different boys/waiters and then decide which one fits into your budget/preferences? Why it would just be like a meat market.
Now I have heard that somewhere before....?

My experience of Telephone Bar is that those that come for free are damn good, so I can't see why you'd want to dally with those requiring tips.

Tipping A Very Useful Topic For Thai Forums
It seems in every tiping thread someone suggests that it's a boring/waste of space. Isn't it easy enough not to read a tiping thread if one is not interested?
In Pattaya, 500 shorttime/1000 longtime is a perfectly acceptable tip for ladyboys in most venues. In Bangkok 1000 shortime is the going rate.
When one gets to know a boy better and you consider him a friend then perhaps you might be inclined to help him out. What the hell, 5000 baht is a big deal to some of these boys but not really a big deal to me.
My point is I'd rather give this to my friends rather than a random boy I offed.
If one has credit card debt they should not be overtipping IMHO unless it gives them pleasure to overtip.
I say pay the going rate and treat the boys with kindness and respect. And there is no better place to find out the going rate than on boards like this.

 yeah good, but than?
Ever thought about this: a "working" carreer ends at 27+
Boy 18-27 has very sattisfied customers and get easy tips up to 6000bht from some "overpaying" welldoners.
Same boy 27+ can't get any customers anymore and has to find a "real" job, and get paid the Thai wages.
Not that easy I think, when you are used to a for Thai meanings extreme luxuary lifestyle
