Why do you think they are straight looking? Or do you equate looking muscular with looking straight?
Ok, maybe if you have experience of the Tawan bar you might KNOW from personal experience that some of them are straight.
(I myself had only one experience with a Tawan guy, and i am pretty certain that despite his muscles he was gay, not that that anecdotal evidence really proves anything).
Anyway, the point is, you seem to be assuming that the more effeminate look is synonymous wth being gay.
This is of course an assumption. I know that in gogo bars in Thailand the 'toot' look seems to be quite common, but that does not mean that more masculine looking lads are not gay as well.
In London gay bars, when I was there last, i felt that compared to straight bars, there was most noticeably two types of guys in the gay bars that you dont really get as much in straight bars. One was the somewhat nellie type (the slightly camp guy that was classically associated with gay men for most of the last century in the West). The other was a buffed up, muscular, often shaved headed type, that seemed quite macho (but a bit too poised to be truly macho, if you know what i mean). There seemed to be more 'muscleheads' than you would get in a typical straight bar.
Compared to Dublin gay bars, there seemed to be less of the nellie type and more of the buff type on the gay scene in London. (Muscleheads havent really reached gay Dublin)
And i believe in America the more muscular look is even more common. Perhaps it is a trend amongs us inverts that is progressive and worldwide and will eventually spread even to the gogo bars of Bangkok?
As Dr. Anne Thrope illustrates, the history of us gayboys fancying the more well-built male has a long history, perhaps even (if you posit the beginning of Western tradition of homosexuality as starting in Greece in the 5th Century BC) a longer heritage that the toot-fanciers.
Perhaps if Alcibiades and Socrates were to be reincarnated today, they would identify sexually more with the 'Tawan' look than the 'toot' look?
Anyway, what i am trying to get at is, i think it is ok for you to comment that the attraction of muscular guys is a mystery to you if you want, but do not just assume that muscular = straight, and thus move it up to the level of accusing muscle fans of being straight-chasers.
This is a very culturally specific viewpoint on your part, remember.
This thread seems to have brought out the two most common prejudices about queer guy's tastes in men that exist within the gay world - the one that muscle-fanciers really want to be some straight boys' leg-spreading bitch, and the one that toot-fanciers are really part of the dirty-raincoat pedo brigade that 'restrain' themselves (for legal reasons)to screwing 18 year olds that look like 15 year olds, in lieu of the 15 year olds themselves.
Two prejudices that should be resisted i feel, even if there might be a smidgen of truth to the accusation in a minority of cases.
