I have been to Burma/Myanmur on 2 occassions now thru the Mae SAI/SOT? border up past Chiang Rai.Its called TACHILEK.Got a baht bus up there,700 baht for the whole day.
No probs in crossing the border, although my Thai friend had to use a different entrance.
Once over the Burma border, had to leave my passport with Burmese immigration until coming back.Got a day stamp, apparantly you have to apply for a visa beforehand to stay longer.
TACHILEK is a tourist town, dirt flooded roads, plenty of moto bike taxis waiting for you with laminated tour brochures wanting to take you to the WAT,KAREN TOUR,GEM SHOP ETC.
After negotiating we decided on the WAT on the hill overlooking TACHILEK,took some grat photos. But couldnt help to notice the soldiers with rifles standing outside buildings.
There is a good pub just over the border, had some Burma beer which is not to my liking as it had a sweet taste. The most problem was the persistent and annoying foot traders who followed us and annoyed us to buy their saddam hussein playing cards and then got angry we werent interested. The markets there was a sight to see with monkey skulls, guns, etc all for sale, just how you could bring it back over the Thai border will be a mystery.I did notice a few accomodation places but all in all TACHILEK didnt feel "safe" to stay overnight nor i believe you could do much in this "rural shanty" type town which is situated in the far north of Myanmur/Burma,surprisingly once you walk back over the border to Thailand it all becomes modern again with the seven eleven and Subway restaurant. But it is worth about 4 hiours out of your time to cross the border over to Tachilek if your up that way.As i said we did find the street sellers were aggressive.
.
Has anyone stayed overnight in TACHILEK?
There was tuk tuk drivers who had guns on their hips,i saw monkey skulls for sale at the market stalls,i went to the temple, this is where you have to pay for someone to look after your shoes.
I noticed the girls wear white sand on their face, all in all TACHILEK is worth a visit.
