Post Silom area restaurant roundup
Anna's Cafe, soi Sala Daeng.

It has become too expensive for everyday use. They still have handsome Isaan men dressed in black doing the waiting.

Swiss Lodge, soi Sala Daeng.

Newish buffet lunch is good value.

Black Canyon Coffee, Silom Complex

When the boss is away the service collapses. Otherwise OK. Hard to get a seat at lunchtime.

Chester's Grill, Silom Complex

Forget the food, go for a soft drink and boy spotting.

Pizza Hut, Silom Complex

Their attempt at going upmarket affected prices but not much more. I dont' go there anymore. Quiet.

S&P, Silom Complex

OK if you want to eat in a restaurant with no outside windows. Suffers from microwave cooking syndrome.

S&P, near Burger King

For some reason I don't go back.

Robinson Department Store

The small cafe is long gone. High-tech food court upstairs is not for me.

Coffee World (near Patpong)

Good for people watching. Why do lesbians go there? Not much food anymore.

Coffee World (near soi 6)

Watch air cond runoff fall into a bucket on the floor. Staff turnover 2x a month.

Burger King Silom road

A moneyboy stronghold before and after nightlife. Why are the French Fries better done in Burger King Pattaya?

La Boulange, soi Convent.

Gay white men get interested looks from desperate farang expat women. Good food thanks to Frog manager. Not too expensive.

Irish X-change, soi Convent

Prices up up under new management last year. Can be smoke-filled.  Real farang food. Lamb anyone?

The Barbican, soi Tanya (the Japanese soi)

Ageing queens gather for set lunch menu (200 B). Nice staff.

Dick's Cafe, soi Twilight off Suriwong

Solves your hunger problem till late. I like the Thai dishes.

Telephone bar, soi 4

Somehow this bar lost the sparkle but the food is still decent.

Sphinx, soi 4

Got too pricey for my weekday dinner.

Jim Thomphson's (Farmer's Market), soi Sala Daeng 1

Lovely decor, good service, affordable. Popular with expat farang and Japanese living nearby. Not many tourists know about it. Speaking of this place, I think I will go there now. :)

Oh Silom why settle only on S&P in the basement of Silom Complex?  There are half-a-dozen places down there all of them so-so value for money.  Clearly I've only ever been to Black Canyon (and always against my better judgment) when the boss is away.  And you've missed out all of upstairs at CP Tower (same building as McDonalds and the Pizza Hut you mentioned - opposite Patpong).  Not only is there a Bookazine there, there's a Thai fast food outfit (something Chilli?) and of course the bogs can be cruisy at times.  Plus (is it?) Sizzlers

And if you're really desparate, Delifrance further up the road towards Bangkok Bank, Dick's Cafe in Soi Prostitute, and Bug'n'Bee on Silom which can also be sedately cruisy on levels 3 & 4

Post Re: Bug n Bee
Had the absolute worst service of any restaurant in Thailand in this place. 3 of us decided to stop in for a quick lunch.Despite having a plethora of wait staff they had to come back 5 times to check on what we had ordered even after having pointed to each and every item from the menu. Waited 20 mintes for the first drink to arrive and then 5 minutes each for the other 2. 35 minutes after ordering, the first entree arrived, followed 5 minutes later by the appetizer. Another 10 minutes elapsed before the next entree arrived. Finally 50 minutes after having ordered, the waitress came back to enquire as to what I had ordered. Apparently she had not bothered to place the order with the kitchen in the first place and I was invited to order again. Meanwhile my first companion had already finished his meal while the second was half way through his. I can't tell you how the food was as I never actually got any. I left out of frustration and went down to BK. My dining companions thought what they had ordered was simply OK.

I recall a review on this board many months ago but a search shows that the thread has been deleted.

I shant darken their door again

I believe the pizza place in CP Tower changed to The Pizza Company when Heineke fell out with Pizza Hut Corp.

That Sizzler's upstairs has the worst air cond noise in town. Despite this it gets too hot because of the the big windows. On the positive side... they didn't make a scene when I forgot to pay once. They just followed me and presented me with the bill outside the restaurant.

I boycott McDonald's. I also boycott Microsoft and Coca Cola. They are evil imperialist capitalists. Consumers in all countries, unite!

Bug n Bee is in the same category as the coffee places... Starbucks et al... you are expected to be on a diet so all you get is a fancy drink. The food they have is of the trendy but not filling sort.

Nooddi (spell?), the noodle place at the entrance of soi Freeman is both trendy plus you can get an actual meal there. Tip well. When my bf asked for a job there two years ago he was told waiter pay was 2 700 B a month.

It is a neat pickup line I have heard you use at La Boulange, Pearl.

Is that you? I haven't seen you since behind the chicken house in Verdun in 1916.

Post Silom area eating - my faves
Saladang cafe by Jim Thompson is their new moniker. It's a little gem with Thai and Farang foods in an elegant cosy spot with a lovely roofed garden - for those who must - or airconditioned luxury indoors.. They have the best fries in Thailand - hand hewn! About half way along Saladang Soi 1 with a large orange flag outside. Sister restaurants at Jim Thompson's fabulous shop on Suriwong and at the Jim Thompson Museum. The catch is last orders at 8.30 p.m. If only he had lived to write about gay Thailand in the 40's and 50's! www.jimthompson.com/restaurants.asp

Fuji Japanese restaurants are an amazing chain. The high standards of food and incredible consistency astound. There is one in the U-Chang Liang (HSBC Bank) building Rama IV on the corner with Saladang Soi 1 and another downstairs at Central Silom. Wait in line at peak times or pop across to view the Lumphini park open air gym across the road.

Also in the U-Chang Liang building is Papa Alfredo's New York Italian restaurants. Portions large enough to feed a small school. They used have charming opera evenings on a Saturday night.

Mention should be made of Zanotti's on Saladang which is one of Bangkok's most fashionable Italian restaurants. One friend won't go there because they serve iceberg lettuce. I had a filthy meal there but they took it away and did not charge. Other tables seemed very happy and place certainly has buzz.

Indigo just off Soi Convent used to be my absolute favourite until the partners split. Three disappointing visits have made us cease to go. The place is prettier than ever but the cooking skills have gone. A rack of lamb was served as three crucified cutlets. Sadly the other partners restaurant Bistingo has failed to reach acceptible level on two visits.

Dick's Cafe on Soi Hotmail (nee Twilight) is terrific. The street theatre is a non-stop cabaret and the food simple but well prepared cafe stuff. Good are fried rice, chciken with cashew nuts can be terrific, a good club sandwich and attractive attentive waiters. One can even spot ajarntrade occasionally picking up a takeaway.

Stretching the area is Mali on the corner of Sathorn Soi One and Soi Ngam Duphli - just behind the Malaysia Hotel. Run by a charming American guy from Mitchigan (I seem to rememeber) and patronised by Swedish Royals - yes HM eats there. The rooms is cosy to a fault and always has lots of mags around. Thai and farang foods at modest prices.

Just across from Mali I keep meaning to try Panthip Place's buffet which has been recommended for years (David in Pattaya was the first). It is about B350 and a terrific buffet. Any reports?

WE seem to have gravitated to Soi Ngam Duphli

Mali is great. Seafood place next door OK but watch for mozzies if outdoors

Excellent Chinese Restaurant (its name) next to Pinnacle. Well known for its dumplings

Post Bug'n'Bee
Yes, in my former life as The Colonel I wrote a review on Bug'n'Bee p092.ezboard.com/fsawatde...=347.topic and described it pretty much as the latest poster found it.  Then a couple of months afterwards someone else wrote a scathing review and Bug'n'Bee had the courtesy to respond and say they would be addressing those issues.  I went a couple of days after that and wrote a further short review stating that things had improved (slightly).  It sounds as if they have reverted.  My reviews are the origins of the snide remarks you see sometimes from the good Dr Thrope about my supposed predeliction for all-day breakfasts.  I see Bug'n'Bee mentioned somewhere as starting a branch.  It would be nice if they got the first place working properly!

Post WowPow at Dick's Cafe
It was nice running into you at Dick's Cafe WowPow. It seemed the only place I ever saw you was at Tawan, my fault, I've been staying home alot over the past several months. The whole "scene" just gets tiring after a while. And yes, I do stop in to Dick's Cafe now and then for a take away meal for the BF and I. Though the quality of their chicken with cashew nuts has dropped considerably from what I remember.

I have not gone to Dick's Cafe for MANY months because of that one waiter who works during the day who is just way TOO uppity and queeny and bitchy for my level of patience. He gets off work at 7:30PM so if I show up it's usually after 7:30PM. Khun Arthit, one of the Managers there knows very well the problems I've had with this waiter and he keeps that one away from me.

On a more positive note I'm glad to see Khun Kung is back. Though working at Ball's Sports Bar. He was greatly missed. When he left the level of testosterone at Dick's Cafe took a huge dive. He is one hot boy... ABs to die for. I hope he gets moved back over to the cafe side. It's a shame to have him languishing around the corner in that black hole area that no one usually goes to.

I did see you pop into Tawan for a takeaway not that long ago.

I rarely go to the Cafe before mid-evening and find all the staff a delight and cute. Dear Krung is missed but he seems to like Balls. The trouble he is always going home to deal with family problems - very sad.

Krung works out at the Lumphini gym near the Senior Citizens Pavillion. - and no he doesn't.
