Loy Kratong Coming- Is Your BF Making Excuses?

Post Loy Kratong Coming- Is Your BF Making Excuses?
Loy Kratong, which has become a kind of Thai Valentine's Day, is a week away.  Romantically committed couples are supposed to go float little thingummies (the kratongs) together to be romantic and pollute.

The big question is:  has your Thai made sudden excuses for this day assuming you don't know its significance?  Make what you will of the answers, but important for those who think they are in committed relationships to know.

Yeah, but lots of folks don't- doesn't help that Thaksin comes out every year telling people "styrofoam is ok!"

And for the rare financially committed couple out there, one of you please try to stay afloat this coming year to ensure that you celebrate Loy Kratong together next year.

I was told by a guy last night that he always makes his Krathong because it means so much more coming from within your self as opposed to simply buying one.   He further said that since the wish he makes when he floats his Krathong comes from within himself, he feels that it will have more meaning if the Krathong construction comes from the same origin.

That being said, do any of the members of this forum regularly participate ( as opposed to just watching ) in the celebration?   If so, have you ever tried making a Krathong?  Perhaps made one with your boyfriend together?

I think that would make it a very romantic occasion as opposed to simply buying one and setting it adrift.

How do you make a Krathong?  I would like to make one here in the states and celebrate on the November full moon.

Thanks, Hobie

That Loi Krathong is in fact an ancient Hindu ceremomy meant to make peace with the spirits of the river? I believe that the significance rests in letting go of your sin. Yes! Thai understand the concept of sin!

The romance bit is because of an old wive's tale which claims that if a boy and a girl launch a krathong together they'll become lovers. Along the same lines as if a buffalo winks at you...you'll have many children.

You must also keep your eyes trained on the krathong as long as humanly possible - because the length of time you spend eying it is directly related to the amount of luck for the next year.

Lovely idea Hobie - I hope that one of our nimble fingered members can help you:D
