Post 'Have Wheels ~ Will Travel': alternative guided travel.
I post this 'advertisement' on the Board in the hope that it is not taken overly poorly or in bad spirit by those who may think it an inappropriate use of this venue.

I did a lot of thinking about whether to post this at all ... but decided in the end to throw caution to the wind and have a go at it. I have asked his opinion as to whether this was a good idea (or not good). He has given me thumbs up.

My dearest old man (Khun Suphot) has a brand new vehicle for hire to anyone interested in taking short or long trips to anywhere in Thailand.

The Entrepreneur:

Suphot is 37 year old and a mature, intelligent and easy-going gay Thai man. He has a great interest in the history and culture of his country, and can communicate that interest enthusiastically to those who are interested and curious. He speaks Thai, Lao, Khymer, and very good English.

He knows the back streets of upcountry Thailand and can take you to places you would not normally see if travelling by more conventional means.

The vehicle:

A brand new Nissan truck with a reasonably large back seat for a second passenger (it is NOT appropriate for more than 2 passengers). If only one passenger, then lots of room for luggage in the back seat. With 2 persons, luggage can be stowed in the box and moved back into the cab for lockup on stops. It has a very efficient air conditioning system for comfortable travel.
The vehicle is well-insured ... insurance for passengers (this being Thailand!)

Travel routes can be either planned by him (according to your desires), or totally up to you (Suphot's middle name is "flexible"). He can meet you at any airport, bus/train station. or hotel in Thailand.

Pricing:

In general, for one day trips the cost would consist of (1) fuel, (2) small meals ( he does not necessarily have to eat in the same places as the customer and (3) a daily fee. For trips than a day ... same as above, but including (4) cost of some over-night accomodation ( again, he does not necessarily need to stay in the same hotel as the client)

Please understand that "extras" are NOT available ... he's a one-man-guy (and that means me!), So please do not even ask.

Other that one proviso, Suphot will always do his utmost to see that any person hiring his vehicle (and himself!) has the best and most enjoyable personalized guided excursion possible.

If any member here has an interest in a service such as this they can contact my email address (david-away@hotmail.com ) or click on the little email icon at the bottom of this post. I will then contact you by return email and send you his mobile phone number . . . or I can do the communication logistics for you.

Khun Suphot and his vehicle:

Cheers ...

Post Re: 'Have Wheels ~ Will Travel': alternative travel REVISITE
I missed this post the first time round.  I've often felt jealous after reading accounts of Smiles's travels/adventures.  I wonder now if Suphot is the brains behind these adventures?

If only Suphot bought a limo rather than a pick up.  It would be fine if I was travelling alone, but knowing my man (extended holiday romance - 5 years now!) I'd be relegated to the back seat while Suphot and Oh become the best of friends.

Post If you are
going to place an advertisement with as much detail as you have smiles you should also post the daily price. Also as an owner of a rental company myself, what insurance cover does the beloved have? What happens in the case of an accident, are the passengers covered for medical cover etc? Very important questions that haven't been covered in your post.

There are far too many casual renters out there who have insufficent/incorrect insurance. For the safety of the bf's potential customers I hope he isn't one of them!

Why, insurance not up to scratch?

Post Re: If you are
No reply because the insurance issue is addressed in the post above.

"Pricing" is also mentioned.

It's obvious he (#1) wants the expenses covered, and (#2) wants a daily fee " ... to be negotiated ... "

Cheers ...

Post Danger
Oh how can you let such a devastatingly handsome fit young Thai man go off with strangers for days at a time. Too much temptation. Someone will want to buy him a Mercedez!! or two!

Post Well insured?
Smiles, I'm just trying to make a point here. Well insured. What does that mean?

If he has first class insurance for a private car, then passengers will be insured. However, once a financial transaction has taken place for the passengers to be insured you need commercial insurance not private. If he has private insurance and he has a crash where one of his passengers is injured and the insurance company find out he was using his vehicle to carry fare paying passengers, his insurance will be null and void.

Unfortuantly the bulk of small Thai rental companies only carry private insurance as commercial insurance is much more expensive.

So, for the benefit of potential clients can you confirm that the bf has COMMERCIAL insurance, covering fare paying passengers? This is for his benefit too, as if his insurance is null and void, he looses as his car will not be insured and the cost of his and whoever elses car is damaged is met by him.

Post As you mention it
John, can you tell us what insurance cover and levels of indemnity or benefits you would expect to be provided by a car rental firm in Thailand... such as yourself has in the past (if not now) been associated with.  If you're offering 'informed' opinion that casts doubt whether another venture might not be up to scratch, at least provide sufficient specific policy detail so we can all see what you are measuring against.

Post Its very simple
Dick. I said it enough in my post. Is his policy for commercial use. Thats the end of it. I am not an insurance broker and your idea of a sufficient policy and mine will be different. But mine have commercial cover so when I take payment for my service my insurance is legal and my customers are covered.

So, does Smiles bf have commercial insurance cover because if it doesn't and something happens then insurance cover may not be there.

Post Don't be so sure

So to summarise then, it's just the regular 'for hire or reward' endorsement that you're talking about, which I'm sure Sophot and Smiles will have (obvioulsy) taken care of given the nature of the venture

Don't be so sure Dick. The MAJORITY of Thai companies do NOT have this as it is more expensive than private insurance.

The fact the Smiles is not confirming his bf has this cover should not be taken as proof he has it IMO

Post Re: Its very simple
Thanks John.

So to summarise then, it's just the regular 'for hire or reward' endorsement that you're talking about, which I'm sure Sophot and Smiles will have (obvioulsy) taken care of given the nature of the venture.  At least we now know you're not alluding to some special passenger accident of death benefit that a commercial hire company might boast or have us belive was the norm. Your reference to the phrase 'medical cover' as you might appreciate, led me to seek clarification.
