Post "Cyber Clean" clampdown launched
Thailand to launch 'Cyber Clean' scheme

Bangkok: Thailand will launch a "Cyber Clean" scheme to get the Internet-surfing public intimately involved in the crackdown on "improper" websites, it was announced Monday.

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Minister Sora-art Klinpratoom said his ministry would place a toolbar on 50 popular Thai websites that allows people who surf the Internet to send messages or pictures of "improper web pages or contents as tip-offs to officials of the ministry immediately".

With the cooperation of Thai surfers, ICT officials would be able to trace online wrongdoers and take legal action against them, Sora-art told the Thai News Agency (TNA).

He said the ministry would evaluate the performance of the Cyber Clean scheme after a three-month trial period.

I guess we can now look forward to several thousand internet cafe operators, web-site providers and so on being shot while resisting arrest or killed in gang warfare over cyber-territory?

is that Toxin has promised to crack down on chat rooms where people organise meetings for sex.

Really? Is that true? If I come on to Yimsuai in chat am I breaking the law? Is this a fact or one of your rumours?

Sage and onion more like. Stickman is not a highly regarded sauce (sic) either.

We need substance not stuffing! I'll go and read what he has to say to placate you - but you might have saved me the bother by simply quoting his remarks and Thaksin Shinawatra's.

This is the source for your rumour mongering is it, Mr. Homintern?

Who cares what this silly old goat has to say? You do - we know that, hardly a recommendation!

Any chance of giving me the verbatim from Thaksin Shinawatra? Unlike you, some of us are not slavish adherents of the world according to Stickman!

Stickman's main claim to fame is that he writes about "naughty nightlife" - did you used to get your opinions about Thailand from Trink before he was set free?

What's the truth of this matter, Homintern? Is it yet another rumour you've picked up from a sex tourist column?

Prime Minister Taksin has switched his focus to another social problem and has declared a new war, like the war on drugs and then the one on corruption.  The new war is going to target pornography.  One of his main targets will be internet sites that provide online gambling and those that "facilitate meetings for sexual purposes".  One has to wonder if this could be the end of Bangkokchat.org?  And what about other sites like Thailandfriends.com where a good amount of the communication on there is related to Western boys meeting Thai girls.  I don't give Bangkokchat very long at all, but the Thailandfriends site should be ok.  I wonder if sites like Match.com and AdultFriendFinder.com will be blocked from Thailand in the future?

Post Re: "Internet Crackdown" from The Nation's web sit
This article apparently gave rise to some of the concerns.  Since the government's official spokesman is quoted, it may or may not have some relevance:

Quote:

Internet crackdown

Published on Oct 19, 2005

The government will launch a crackdown on pornographic material, offensive cartoons and Internet websites that contain inappropriate material, the government spokesman said yesterday.

Surapong Suebwonglee said more than five million websites from around the world feature rape in their content, causing widespread alarm among relevant authorities.

There are also games about rape, he said after he raised his concerns at the Cabinet meeting yesterday.

He said Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra is now planning to supervise the crackdown on pornography and has already demanded to see clear results from relevant authorities by December.

Surapong said the crackdown would target pornographic material, cartoons and websites. He believed technological systems must be in place to block pornographic websites operated overseas, while relevant officials would nail down and arrest operators of the offending sites in Thailand.

With sincere effort from all relevant parties, the severity of the problem should dramatically drop, he said.
