Last night at the rice queen bar, mention was made of buying a

mobile on arrival with a 30 day "contract'



All my calls in LOS from OZ are on divert from my home number at my expense.

Any call I make is via Australia back to LOS

I am not sure of whether I can afford to make calls in LOS to LOS numbers.

How does this work buying a 30 day mobile on arrival?

I would'nt bother buying a 30 day mobile.  Why don't you buy a Thai sim card, they are cheap enough, and if you have an old mobile phone, then use that.  This subject comes up time and time again, and that is your best solution.  

And, if you don't have an old mobile phone, you can buy a decent used one in Tuckom on S. Pattaya Road (Pattaya) or MBK Centre (Bangkok) for B2,000, or maybe less.  I picked up a pre-paid DTAC "starter kit" for B199 for a friend visiting from overseas.

The pre-paid DTAC starter kit is basically just the SIM card.  I didn't open the package, but it probably includes many "special offers" for ring tones and such.  The kit also includes a minimal amount of call credit -- B50, I think?
