Today's issue of the International Herald Tribune contains the interesting information that "British law allows British nationals to enter civil unions with non-British nationals of the same gender at British diplomatic offices worldwide, so long as the local government does not object. While Hong Kong denied this opportunity to Britons resident there, the report states that: "So far Australia, Croatia, South Africa, Venezuela, Belarus, Israel, Switzerland, Vietnam, Colombia, Japan, Turkmenistan, Costa Rica and certain U.S. states have allowed local British diplomatic offices to conduct same-sex civil unions for British subjects."

Britons living in Thailand who wish to enter into a civil union with their Thai BFs might want to inquire whether they can do this in Thailand. It would be interesting to know if it is also possible for citizens of other countries that permit same-sez civil unions - e.g., Canada, etc. - to have the ceremony in their consulate.
