PostAuthor: Astroman » Thu 24 Nov, 2005 4:14 am

turns out I'll be in Bangkok for the next four nights with my ladyboy tilac from Udon Thani. Neither of us know Bangkok well.

any suggestions for discos and nightlife?

or restaurants? not looking for overpriced joints like the oriental hotel but rather good value like Buscarrum.

staying in Sukhumvit area but easy enough to get anywhere by taxi or tuk tuk , i suppose,. thanks.

Finally got to eat at Papa Alfredos which has been mentioned many times on this site.

We had a great meal and the service was wonderful. The cost is reasonable if you stick to pastas and appetisers but can go up quickly if you order the steak dishes.

Highly recommended!!!

It's on the ground floor of the U-Chuliang Building, Rama IV Road where it intersections with Soi Saladaeng I (between Silom and Sathorn).

I have eaten there only once, but was very disappointed. Zanotti, on Saladaeng, is so much better it isn't even funny.

Bussaracum a "good value"? I'd put it in the same category as the hotel Thai restaurants: poofed up Thai food for farangs, at inflated prices. So they carve their vegetables up all nice and pretty. Who cares?

I, too, was a little surprised to see Bussaracum described as 'good value'; though these judgements are all relative to our expectations and funds. Having read a good review of the place, I checked it out once, foolishly, on my own. I was the only customer apart from a group of Russians with a guide, seated, mercifully, about 20 feet away from me. The service was impeccably formal, the food beautiful to look at, but the much-vaunted 'Royal Thai Cuisine' did not seem very special to me and the vast spaces made for a very cold ambiance. I would say that by Bangkok standards I had a very expensive meal - though perhaps not up to the prices of the Oriental, which I've never been to. (For those who remember, it was the scene of the little wai-ing scene with a waiter carrying 20 plates that I recounted sometime back. Not worth the telling again.)

However, it always surprises me that The Mango Tree in Soi Tarntawan seldom gets a mention. A number of guys who were regulars at the Tarntawan Place didn't seem to know it was there, but took my suggestion and came back with reports of a good evening. (I suspect that many who manage to get beyond Tawan and swing into the sub-soi to Solid, GC, Nature Boy, etc., have other things on their minds than food and just don't notice it!)

I can make no claims about how 'authentically Thai' the food is, but the clients usually seem to be about 50/50 Thai and Western. Most of the tables are in the open air (perhaps a little too close to each other for those used to 'fine dining'?), it's busy and quite jolly without being raucous, the service is good and the Thai menu extensive. For a Westerner at least, it doesn't 'cost an arm and a leg'.

And the waiters know who they are dealing with. One evening a stunning lad decided to spend the lulls in service by my table, chatting me up, practising his English, explaining the food and generally flirting his tits off in the nicest possible way. He got a discreetly conveyed private tip for his pains, but only took it after a quick look round to see nobody was looking. House policy, I suppose, that I was more than happy to infringe. Sadly, I didn't get to pop it in his underwear.

But, of course, this being SWF, somebody won't approve of the place, for the best of reasons. (You learn to cover your rear after a while!)

One of my favorites, which Thai friends introduced me to and which my BF chose as the place to celebrate his 30th birthday, is up a small soi opposite Panthip Plaza on Petchaburi. It is called "Once Upon a Time," and you have a choice of sitting outside in the garden (and being bitten by mosquitoes although repellant is provided) or inside one of three small authentic Thai houses. The surrounding condominiums take a bit from the setting, and it is some way down the soi, but the food and service are excellent and the food is both very good and not very expensive. There is a collection of Thai dolls, furniture and other artefacts in the houses, and the upstairs loo is wonderful.
If you are looking for cheap authentic Thai food, try the restaurants in Chatuchak Weekend market, sections 1 and 2. You can then browse in the market as well.
