Agriculture Ministry regulates chicken sales / Tamiflu?
"Bangkok (dpa) - To try to curb the spread of bird flu, which last week claimed its 13th Thai victim, the government on Wednesday issued a decree that makes the unauthorized transport of poultry a crime. Agriculture Minister Sudarat Keyuraphan issued a ministerial regulation that outlaws all transport of poultry in the kingdom without documented permission from the Department of Livestock. A breach of the new law, which goes into effect Thursday, carries a 20,000-baht fine and/or a one-year jail term.
According to the Department of Communicable Diseases, Thailand has had 19 confirmed cases of bird flu, and 13 patients have died. Another 10 people are listed as "suspected cases". Thailand, after covering up an initial outbreak of the pandemic in late 2003, has since put in place a nationwide monitoring team, quick culling of sick poultry and a compensation system for farmers who lose their stock.
The government has allocated a 100-million-dollar budget to contain the pandemic over the next three years.
A total of 62 people have died since the H5N1 bird-flu strain, which can be deadly in humans, surfaced in 2003 in South Korea. Three countries other than Thailand have reported fatalities: Vietnam, Indonesia and Cambodia."

Re: Agriculture Ministry regulates chicken sales
Does anyone know if it's OK to eat cooked eggs, (like scrambled, hard boiled, sunnyside up etc.), as opposed to cooked chicken meat?

 Avian Flu defensive strategy
AVIAN INFLUENZA: Care units set up in four hospitals
The Nation, October 27, 2005
"Bangkok prepares ‘defensive strategy’ against risk of widespread outbreak. About 40 special units in four of Bangkok’s major hospitals have been set up as a preparatory measure to deal with a possible influx of bird-flu cases, a senior health official said. Dr Chatri Bancheun, director-general of the Department of Medical Services, said that the units had been prepared in case of an increase in patients suffering from bird flu.
The four hospitals, which are all run by the Public Health Ministry are preparing for the possibility of patients being transferred from some 1,200 hospitals nationwide. However, he asked the public not to panic and described the move as a “defensive strategy”. “It doesn’t mean the situation is getting worse. I can confirm that there have still been no human-to-human transmission cases,” he said....."

 Re: Avian Flu defensive strategy
An expert on the TV last night said that it was OK to eat cooked chicken (well cooked) but there was a tiny question mark over eggs and he said that it would be wise only to eat fully cooked eggs not raw ones as in some mayonnaises, chocolate mousse etc.
I have been wondering if I should get some Tamiflu incase the worst happens and the virus mutates and gets passed between human beings. Would it really be useful? Would I have the right one for the strain? Where would I get some?

 Re: Avian Flu defensive strategy
Tamiflu isn't a vaccine. It's an anti-viral which you take after you get the flu. It alleviates the symptoms and decreases the time you're ill by 1-2 days.

 Tamiflu
Returning to Pattaya from Los Angeles, my Doctor whose is usually conservative in prescribing medicine gave me a prescription. It is a package of 10 tablets which is to be taken twice a day over 5 days. It is NOT a substitute for a flu vaccination the patient information says

 Tamiflu
Boots is the first place I checked for Tamiflu, perhaps two years ago -- didn’t have it, weren’t interested in getting it prescription or no.
I have obtained it at several hospitals. I found the easiest to be at Pattaya International Hospital. In fact, those are the only two times I have been there.
You tell the receptionist what you want; she sends you to a doctor; you go to the pharmacy and pay for it; they order it, and call you three or four days later when it arrives.
As best I recall it is about 2,200 bt for ten capsules - one course of treatment.
People I know are getting it for their boyfriend and his family as well.
I have a friend who ridicules me for buying Tamiflu, yet spends hundreds of dollars each year to insure his home. That's OK, I bought some for him too. it will cost him $500 per capsule.

 Tamiflu
Quote: I have obtained it at several hospitals
Genuine(Roche) Tamiflu is available from the Bangkok Christian Hospital on Silom Road.
Cost for a weeks course ( 10 tablets) Baht 2600. As pointed out before, Tamiflu will not prevent Avian Flu, it is simply a medication to alleviate the symptons of influenza per-sa.
It will, on average, reduce the term of influenza by two days and should ONLY be taken when a medical practioner has confirmed that you are suffering from influenza and are not more than two days into the bout. m Starting a course more than two days into a bout of influenza and the medication is far less effective.
