you obviously haven't eaten phad thai at many other places then - balcony's kitchen can be recommended for many things, but phad thai is not one of them
try a phad thai wrapped in omelette at Dick's Cafe or for real value for money try the street stall outside Wall Street Tower on business days and Smiles don't bother - both of these use the more traditional style noodle for this dish bkkguy |

Quote: I know, damnit. I have to specifically order it made with large noodles every time. They don't like it 'specially I guess, but the customer is always right. Right? Cheers ... " ... good GOD, this is even worse than I thought ... " |

I go for the phad thai at Telephone, never tried the Balcony's but will some time soon. Also tried it at Dicks and Mali restaurant and it's OK there too. Let's face it, there's not much that can go wrong with one of the most popular thai dishes being cooked by a thai chef ... except at the Malaysia hotel where it was nothing like I expected.

If you want to taste what THAI connoisseurs consider the best phad thai in town (and I agree), you need to visit Wat Liab, at the foot of Memorial Bridge (Saphan Phut). A master phad thai chef has been setting up stall within the grounds of the temple every evening for well over ten years. I think he still charges only 15 baht.
The other popular choice is Tipsamai, an old and respected phad thai shop on Mahachai Road just down from the Golden Mount. I personally prefer the Wat Liab version. |

Now I know that the gourmets amongst you will shoot me down for this, or else ignore me completely (I don't know which will be the better) but for my money the Phad Thai at the Balcony is very good value for money - especially when it is served by the dainty hands of Dew (back at weekends and Thae).
The chicken/pork/shrimp etc is tender and tasty, the noodles are just the right consistency and the other ingredients perfectly compliment the whole. Thrown down with a foaming glass of Tiger a real treat. Edited by: Smiles2 at: 10/23/04 11:02 am |
