Gives you a great feeling of (cultural) superiority, doesn't it?
By the way, do you think that those who can answer these questions are any wiser?undefined

How long time ago was Jesus born
Depends who you ask, Herbert. It is certainly true that the poor - who lack a basic education - will experience problems with these questions.
I doubt many Americans could answer these questions either. What is your point, m'dear?

 Re: try this
One of the things I love about Thailand is the cultural differences and many of these questions are just about a different culture not about ignorance.
The lack of a common knowledge base can frequently cause the sort of misunderstandings that I find so amusing and so much fun.
I've never asked any Thai about Jesus and doubt I ever will as it wouldn't interest either of us.

 nobody cares..........
If you are feeling superior to the undereducated lower classes of Thais that work in the bars etc. you need to get a life...Christ and Christianity do not mean much here, sort of like what Bhuddism means to the average farang in their home country.. Do you really think they would know when Bhudda was born etc... Stupid is as stupid does...

 Re: Another lost soul
The world war #s are entirely culturally relative. What we call World War One was in fact primarilly a European conflict. There have been other wars that involved multiple Asian natons.

 Re: Another lost soul
The best question almost no Thai can answer about the Second World War is "What was Thailand's role?". Apart from generally not knowing it even took place, they also don't know that Thailand was occupied by Japanese troops and hosted Japanese POW camps. However many questions most Thai can't answer result from the total failure of their school system to educate them. I remember the look of complete revelation on a bar boy's face when, watching a television programme with me, it became clear that the Sun is a ball of fire and the Earth revolves around it
I realise that that is probably a revelation (or an anathema) to many Americans also. Intelligent Design, anyone?

 stop asking...
barboys these questions and ask some middle class Thai people....oh, yeah, you don't know any of those. Then try asking some street kids in the states if they can even find america on a world map and see the answer you get....
If it makes you feel good that you can stump poor uneducated sex workers on basic world history/pop questions then good for you. Maybe let them ask you a few questions (in Thai) about the growing rules and conditions of crops in ther hometown regions. Would you have a clue how to answer the most basic questions like that?

Americans have nothing on Thais cultural awareness
Ever watched a segment on Jay Leno's show called "Jaywalk"? He goes around Hollywood asking people on the street various cultural questions. The level of stupidity and ignorance are off the wall.
He also has a spoof called "Battle of the Jaywalk All-Stars" in which three of the worst examples compete against each other.
If I had to bet between a all-Thai "Battle" and an all-American "Battle" I'm not sure who'd be on top.
So there, you attitude-heavy Western snobs!!

As a rule, I ask those people under the age of 18 I come in contact with,
"Do you know who Elvis is?'
Noone knows.
Truly, the "King" is dead and John Lennon can't be too far behind him.
